I liked my team and work during the internship. Further, the perks offered at DE Shaw including, but not limited to, pay and the awesome office were a cherry on the cake. So, it wasn’t really hard to make the decision.
Keeping a good rapport with your mentor definitely helps a lot. You get to learn a lot while you also improve your chances of getting great feedback. It’s really important to communicate your ideas effectively (even more in the case of remote internships). You will find yourself doing a lot of presentations during the internship and so, it’ll be great if you could work on your presentation skills a bit even though I don’t really think you need to prepare much for the internship before it starts.
No interviews! But there is a final presentation, and I was told that the decisions for return offer mainly depend on this. So make sure you rock this!
Certainly, it does. I had an amazing relationship with my mentor and my manager. Both of them are amazing people and connecting with them even on a personal level helped a lot to learn from them. I am sure they would have some say in the evaluation and it can never hurt to have a great relationship with them.
I am not sure what are the exact criteria for making the decision at DE Shaw. But I think that in general, most companies would use quality of work, ability to communicate effectively, and the speed of delivering results as one of the criteria.
My final presentation was good and I got great feedback on that. I worked really hard preparing for the presentation. I think I spent ~20% of my internship time preparing for the final presentation. That worked out.
No. However, DE Shaw is known for handing out full time offers to a sizable percentage of its interns.
