Necessities for targeting your field?
Hi budding ‘Engineers’ I will just pen down what happened with me. So, I opted for civil engineering in IIT Delhi because I wanted a “Sarkari Naukri” and civil provides a plethora of opportunities in Govt. sector. In my mind there was no intention to apply for internship or even placements. I was preparing for ESE from my 6th sem. I haven’t done any internship in summer break after 6th sem. When the procedure of placement started in the 7th semester as every student, I was also in a state of self-doubt that whether to apply for it or not. I was literally having ZERO command on coding and no exposure of consulting. So, I talked to my seniors and on of my friends about it corelating it with my future plans. In the end I zeroed down that I will only apply in “CORE civil engineering jobs” only. So, finally I made my CV for core profile only.
In the very beginning you should know which profile you will be targeting for that talk to the seniors currently working in that field how is there experience, work life balance, etc. Specifically, if you are preparing for CIVIL Core then you should be through with the concepts of it what you have been taught in past 3 years anything can be asked.

No comment as I haven’t sat for internship.
In my case something very unique happened which no one can ever imagine. I applied for only TATA Projects and the shortlist came out on 27th Nov in which my name was not there. So I was feeling like “okay man you never wanted that job desperately, so just chill” but my inner self was a little depressed about it. The interviews of the shortlisted candidates happened on 2nd Dec and 6 candidates from civil were selected. Then on 4th Dec at 12 PM I received a call from TnP that your interview is scheduled at 1:30 PM for TATA Projects. I was shocked. I opened my CV after 3.5 months so that I could revisit what all I have written. Contacted few of my batchmates who were selected couple of days before. Finally went to my interview which went well. It was completely technical covering transportation, soil mechanics, open channel flow, enviro and what not.
So, Juniors just remember one quote from my side: “For there is nothing that God cannot do” Just put your sincere efforts for anything you are preparing and in the future you will see that you will succeed in it. One of my very best friends was rejected in 6 straight interviews in first three days after giving all the tests and 3-hour long interviews but still got a very handsome package from Amazon on the fourth day. So consistently work for your goal.

In the first- and second-year student should explore different fields (not talking about performing arts). They should see is there anything that they enjoy doing like coding or solving case studies or any similar thing or even their core engineering. They should at least try one project in there department even.
I personally believe that student should have a solid backup before jumping in something. For some it might be CAT, or Govt job or something else.

In my close proximity there are many who either not got any intern through OCS in their 3rd year or even not sat for the internship process but still able to get very good packages for best companies possible. I think in out college there are 100s of example every year. Only thing that matters is that how well you plan the time you have. If you don’t have a internship you can
• Work with a startup any try and learn new things
• Work on a project with some good professors and be a part of something good. • Can work hard to hone your skills like coding which will be very beneficial to you in the placements.
So, in one word it doesn’t affect much in the placements.
As such I haven’t faced any issue because I have applied for only one company and that too it was not having any test. The only flaw in online interview which I observed was that many a times more than one candidate login to the teams when someone’s interview is going on. This problem could be resolved by appointing a moderator from student side.
For me the online placements were equally good.

What I have seen is that people manage both the things quite well but if possible, students should contact some seniors who have successfully pulled this up.
Now if you are wanting a core civil engineering job through campus placement then few very important things to be catered in the same priority order:
• CGPA(Very Very Important)
• Core projects or Research work
• Internships if any

Final word is that choose I field which you think you can do for next 30-40 years. You should not get bored while doing it. In 1st and 2nd year explore different fields. In 3rd year zero down to 1 or 2 fields try to get more info about it. If possible, try and do an internship in that field. During placements be very composed (not saying “calm and composed” because calm rehna is very difficult). In the end you should know that everyone from IIT Delhi is capable of getting a very good job, and if you work for it, if not in Placement Drive 1 and definitely in Placement Drive 2 you will get placed.
